Norbeck Wildlife Preserve + My Favorites
Located within the Black Hills National Forest, the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve covers 34,255 acres (13,862 ha) and is easily accessed from surrounding towns, Custer, Hill City and Keystone. Bordering Mount Rushmore National Memorial to the northeast and Custer State Park to the south, this area was originally designated as a preservation sanctuary for game animals and birds in 1920. One of America's most well-known sights, the Mount Rushmore National Memorial is located at Keystone about 35 miles from Rapid City. The granite sculptures of the heads of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt were constructed between 1927 and 1941. Visitors can partake in ranger or self-guided tours of the mountain sculpture. Stroll along the presidential trail for an 'up-close' look. The sculptors studio contains some original sketches of the designs for the mountain. This park also contains the Lincoln Borglum Museum and a visitor's information center. Black Elk Wilderness + My Favorites
Managed by the Forest Service, the Black Elk Wilderness area comprises 13,605 acres (5,505 ha) located next to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, within the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve.
